Race 08 had a very special theme: bodies of water. Did you know there are 10 individual ponds/ bodies of water on CU campus alone?
This race took racers far south down to Thunderbird Lake, and north to Evert Pierson Fishing Pond, two marine areas that are 3 miles apart in a straight line.
Nothing but good vibes and no complaints from the incredible 12 racers that made it out to compete. Notably, Race 08 is the first in Boulder Alleycat history to have a fixie overall winner! Congrats to
dynamic duo Carson and Campbell (#029 & #027) for being insanely fast on fixies.
This race also featured a special twist; this riddle was given to each racer at the start alongside
the checkpoint list:
The herd stands guard where racers are born,
To the northeast the monarch of the plains points his horn.
Before the walls that hold and the mythical birds,
Different species' exist, safe in their herds.
Amid this sacred realm a single pond lies,
A weave of trail has it surrounded! oh my.
Seek not the scattered ponds your maps commend,
For the treasure awaits, sunken at the southern end.
The riddle pointed to Valmont bike park, with mentions of the nearby jail and airport which lie just north of the dirtjumps and slopestyle areas. Sunken at the south
end of the lake at Valmont park was a 'treasure chest' filled with every checkpoint, the reward for solving the riddle being an instant win in essence. In the end, however, no racer solved the riddle, and the treasure
went uncollected.
